& Locally Sewn Patchwork
Sewing in front of a crowd is weirdly more fun than I expected. At markets or craft fairs or other events, I always feel weird just kinda waiting for people to come look at my stuff. When I have needle and thread in my hand, or my sewing machine with me, I can get things done and pour some of that AuDHD/Anxiety into making art.
One of the most fun is doing live upcycling, where folks choose a thrifted garment, hat, bag, etc., then choose the embellishments — art patches, lace edges, vintage illustrations — that suit them. Then I have folks lay them out exactly where they like, and pin or spray-baste them in place before I sew. They go walk the market, and I get to sew up their garment while they wait.
Recently I came into ownership of a 1915 Davis Underfeed treadle sewing machine. She’d been in the same family the entire time, four generations of women using her to sew. She was taken care of decently well, for the most part, and still runs. I’m cleaning her up and getting her back in full working order so I can bring her to live sewing events.
